Trauma-Sensitive Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (TS-MTSS)

Trauma-Sensitive Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (TS-MTSS) utilize the whole school environment to grow the well-being of children, adolescents, school staff, and caregivers. School settings include classrooms, corridors, offices, playground, dining hall, library, and other common rooms. MTSS also focuses on a child’s journey to school (e.g. school bus) as well as the child’s home environment.

Course objectives

Designed by iSTEP-GLOBAL experts, our Trauma-Sensitive Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (TS-MTSS) is uniquely based on research evidence underpinning each of the MTSS tiers, i.e. Tier 1 stabilization techniques in class and schools, (ii) Tier 2 targeted group-based interventions for healing trauma in children and adolescents, and (iii) Tier 3 intensive individual therapy. iSTEP-Global TS-MTSS provides a thorough prevention and intervention framework to support all students in their relationships, learning, behavior, and mental health.

Our TS-MTSS strategies aim to resolve children’s trauma-related difficulties at Tiers 1 and 2, however, there will always be a small number of children who require an intensive intervention at Tier 3. Intentionally, the strategies children learn at Tier 1 and Tier 2 provide the foundational skills (e.g. forming attachments, creating a sense of safety, and connection to resourcefulness) to increase the likelihood of a child responding well to, and healing at Tier 3.

At the end of the course, students will have an empirically-based trauma sensitive MTSS framework to apply within their own educational setting(s). Students will be able to identify and apply a wide diversity of interventions over Tier 1 Classroom and school, Tier 2 Targeted interventions for groups of children, and Tier 3 intensive individual counseling and therapy.
