Impact of trauma on child and adolescent relationships

iSTEP-Global experts share how trauma can deeply affect a child or adolescent’s ability to form and maintain healthy relationships. Participants learn how trauma may lead to mistrust, fear of closeness, difficulty reading social cues, or intense emotional reactions. These challenges can result in social withdrawal, conflict with peers, or strained relationships with adults. As relationships are key to emotional and academic development, trauma-sensitive approaches help create safe, consistent environments where young people can rebuild trust and develop positive, supportive connections.
