Goals and components of a trauma-sensitive school

A trauma-sensitive school is an educational environment that recognizes and responds to the impact of trauma on students’ learning, behavior, relationships, and development. Participants learn the goals and components of trauma-sensitive schools to create safe, supportive, and predictable spaces where all students, especially those who have experienced trauma, can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

Trauma-sensitive schooling doesn’t require knowing a student’s trauma history, rather, it’s a universal approach that benefits all students by promoting resilience and a supportive classroom climate

To embed the components of a trauma-sensitive school, a trauma-informed leadership team will need to be developed, the schools current environment and practice assessed, policies and procedures adapted or developed, and a process for ongoing monitoring and evaluation need to be designed and implemented.

A trauma-sensitive school is not just a place of academic learning, it is a healing community that promotes resilience, equity, and long-term success for all students.
