Course objectives

iSTEP-GLOBAL experts share that recognizing resultant signs and symptoms from trauma exposure begins by acknowledging how traditional definitions of trauma have undermined the identification of trauma in children and adolescents.

Participants will learn the signs of post-traumatic stress, the co-morbid signs of anxiety, and depression, along with the more pervasive signs of developmental trauma in children and adolescents. The later signs are akin to complex trauma in adulthood. Differences in the types of trauma exposure are connected to different developmental trauma responses in children.

Finally, the course covers risk and protective factors for child traumatization.

Activities and assignments

Activities, based on different learning styles, involve written lectures, TEDTalks, videos, webpages, books, and journal publications to enable a diversity of learning experiences

A pragmatic approach is taken to course activities and assignments. Assignments are based on deep learning through application to real-life contexts, e.g. many activities and assignments result in the development of open education materials on different aspects of trauma to be shared with colleagues, caregivers, children, and others.

Students are advised to develop a reflective journal of ‘lessons learned’ for real-life situations.

OpenAI ChatGPT

Students are advised to use ChatGPT to ask questions throughout lessons. To ask your questions, open the ChatGPT search page (click on the link below).

NB: There is no research evidence to support ChatGPT strategies for individual client’s mental health.
